A Nuchal Translucency (NT) Ultrasound is a diagnostic examination performed during a specific window of early pregnancy. The examination includes detailed imaging of your baby and measurement of the nuchal translucency - the fluid-filled space at the back of the developing baby’s neck.

What’s Included

  • Diagnostic ultrasound evaluation

  • Interpretation by a board-certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician

  • Finalized diagnostic report

  • Printed ultrasound images to take home

What This Ultrasound Evaluates

During your examination, detailed ultrasound imaging and measurements are obtained to evaluate early fetal development and the pregnancy. The examination may include:

  • Crown-rump length (CRL) and gestational age

  • Nuchal translucency (NT) measurement

  • Fetal cardiac activity

  • Early fetal anatomy

  • Head and brain structures

  • Face and profile

  • Spine

  • Abdominal structures

  • Arms and legs

  • Placental location

  • Amniotic fluid

  • Other clinically appropriate findings

The nuchal translucency measurement can provide important information during early pregnancy and may be used along with other clinical information or prenatal screening to assess the pregnancy.

When Should I Schedule?

For optimal visualization and the best opportunity to obtain the necessary images and measurements, First Cherished Moments recommends scheduling your Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound between 12w5d and 13w6d of pregnancy.

This examination must be completed before 14 weeks of pregnancy.

You may schedule a Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound independently or based on a recommendation from your healthcare provider.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder. A full bladder can help improve visualization during a transabdominal examination.

All diagnostic ultrasounds at First Cherished Moments are performed abdominally. We do not perform transvaginal ultrasound examinations.

After scheduling, you’ll receive an email with important pre-appointment information and paperwork to review. All required forms will be completed and signed in the studio at your appointment.

Your Results

Your ultrasound will be performed by a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) and submitted for interpretation by a board-certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician.

Your sonographer cannot provide or interpret diagnostic findings during your appointment. Once the examination has been reviewed, a finalized diagnostic report will be provided according to your selected report-delivery preferences and can be shared with your healthcare provider.

Please Note

A Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound is an ultrasound assessment and does not by itself diagnose or rule out a chromosomal or genetic condition. Your healthcare provider can discuss prenatal screening or diagnostic testing options with you when appropriate.

Ultrasound findings may occasionally require additional imaging, follow-up, or further evaluation by your healthcare provider. A Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound does not replace routine prenatal care or an established relationship with an obstetric healthcare provider.
