A Detailed Fetal Anatomy Survey is a diagnostic ultrasound examination that provides an expanded evaluation of fetal anatomy and the pregnancy. It includes detailed imaging and measurements of fetal structures and may incorporate additional views or assessments based on the reason for the examination and individual pregnancy.

What This Ultrasound Evaluates

During your examination, detailed ultrasound imaging and measurements are obtained to evaluate fetal anatomy, growth, and development. The examination may include:

• Fetal position and presentation

• Fetal biometric measurements

• Estimated fetal weight (EFW) and growth

• Head and brain structures

• Face and profile

• Spine

• Heart and cardiac structures

• Chest

• Abdomen and abdominal organs

• Kidneys and bladder

• Arms, legs, hands, and feet

• Placental location and appearance

• Umbilical cord and cord insertion

• Amniotic fluid

• Cervical assessment when clinically appropriate

• Additional targeted views or measurements when clinically appropriate

• Other clinically appropriate findings

The ability to visualize individual structures can vary depending on gestational age, fetal position, maternal anatomy, and other factors. If all required anatomy cannot be adequately visualized during the examination, follow-up imaging may be recommended.

How Is This Different From a Standard Fetal Anatomy Survey?

Both the Standard Fetal Anatomy Survey and Detailed Fetal Anatomy Survey provide a comprehensive evaluation of fetal anatomy and development. The appropriate examination depends on the individual pregnancy and the reason for the ultrasound.

A Standard Fetal Anatomy Survey is generally performed as a routine evaluation of fetal anatomy during the second trimester.

A Detailed Fetal Anatomy Survey provides an expanded assessment and may be appropriate when there is a specific clinical indication, pregnancy history, previous imaging finding, or another reason for a more targeted evaluation.

Each examination provides valuable diagnostic information and is designed to meet different clinical needs.

When Should I Schedule?

A Detailed Fetal Anatomy Survey is typically performed during the second trimester. For optimal visualization of fetal anatomy, First Cherished Moments recommends scheduling between 20 and 22 weeks whenever possible.

The appropriate timing may vary depending on your individual pregnancy or the reason for the examination. You may schedule a Detailed Fetal Anatomy Survey independently or based on a recommendation from your healthcare provider.

Preparing for Your Appointment

No special preparation is typically required for a Detailed Fetal Anatomy Survey.

After scheduling, you’ll receive an email with important pre-appointment information and paperwork to review. All required forms will be completed and signed in the studio at your appointment.

Your Results

Your ultrasound will be performed by a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) and submitted for interpretation by a board-certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician.

Your sonographer cannot provide or interpret diagnostic findings during your appointment. Once the examination has been reviewed, a finalized diagnostic report will be provided according to your selected report-delivery preferences and can be shared with your healthcare provider.
