A Biophysical Profile (BPP) is a diagnostic ultrasound examination used to assess specific indicators of fetal well-being. During the examination, your baby is observed for movements, muscle tone, and breathing movements, while the amount of amniotic fluid is also evaluated.

What This Ultrasound Evaluates

During your examination, ultrasound imaging is used to observe and assess four components of fetal well-being:

• Fetal breathing movements

• Fetal body movements

• Fetal tone

• Amniotic fluid volume

Each component is evaluated according to established criteria and contributes to the overall ultrasound portion of the biophysical profile.

A BPP focuses on these specific indicators of fetal well-being and does not include fetal growth measurements or an estimated fetal weight. If both fetal growth and a BPP are needed, a Growth + BPP Ultrasound should be scheduled instead.

When Should I Schedule?

Biophysical Profiles are typically performed during the third trimester (beginning at 28 weeks) and may be used to assess fetal well-being or as part of ongoing pregnancy monitoring.

The appropriate timing can vary depending on the reason for your examination and your individual pregnancy. You may schedule a Biophysical Profile independently or based on a recommendation from your healthcare provider.

Preparing for Your Appointment

No special preparation is typically required for a Biophysical Profile.

After scheduling, you’ll receive an email with important pre-appointment information and paperwork to review. All required forms will be completed and signed in the studio at your appointment.

Your Results

Your ultrasound will be performed by a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) and submitted for interpretation by a board-certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician.

Your sonographer cannot provide or interpret diagnostic findings during your appointment. Once the examination has been reviewed, a finalized diagnostic report will be provided according to your selected report-delivery preferences and can be shared with your healthcare provider.

Ultrasound findings may occasionally require additional imaging, follow-up, or further evaluation by your healthcare provider. A Biophysical Profile does not replace routine prenatal care or an established relationship with an obstetric healthcare provider.
